Two Strong Arms: The Power of a Hug

by Maureen Hunter on August 16, 2011

The power of a hug is in the fact that words aren't necessary to convey the intent behind such a simple yet powerful action. In such an uncomplicated, uncostly little gesture, so much can be conveyed and experienced. The benefits are endless. I've come up with my own list, see if you can add to it:

The touch of acceptance

The touch of support

The touch of friendship

The touch of sharing

The touch of companionship

The touch of security

The touch of understanding

The touch of caring

The touch of presence

The touch of love

The touch of belonging

The touch of celebration

The touch of connection

The touch of grace

The touch of warmth

The touch of spirit

The touch of compassion

The touch of healing

A hug is worth a thousand words.  ~ Author Unknown

Amen to that, Maureen. I agree with every word. For me, the hug represents the touch of cleansing. I experienced the greatest one to date a couple of weeks ago when meeting a German friend for the first time. We'd communicated online for a while, and as such, she knows about Chris. The hug she gave when we first met…my God, it was something. There were many more during the few days we spent together, but that first one…amazing.

Been using that power for years.  It sometimes makes people jump back a peg or two, when you sense they need one- or you haven't seen them in a while… but, I've learned that today is today- why wait to let them know you love them and will miss them.  Or, if they really need it- why wait for them to feel worse before someone provides some "chicken soup…You may not have that chance tomorrow.

Oh, so true. In the loneliest times of life, a hug sounds like a lifeline thrown out to you. Thanks for the gentle reminder to give them freely. :)

Hi Maureen,
There is this famous Bollywood movie which involves the hero of the movie giving people in need and in sad times a "Jaadu Ki Jhappi" hat roughly translates as "The Magic Hug" and it showed the power of hug and the happiness it causes. That had become a craze after the movie! A hug means many things, it says that you care without actually saying it! :)

The Magic Hug indeed….the Bollywood slant reminds me a bit of laughter yoga which always was in India……laughter and hugs, you cant go wrong :)
